Who is Eligible?

Your child may be eligible for free school meals if you receive any of the following:

• Income Support
• Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
• Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
• Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
• The guaranteed element of Pension Credit
• Child Tax Credit (with an annual income of no more than £16,190)
• Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)
• Universal Credit (with an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400)

How to Apply

Applying for free school meals is simple and can be done online. Follow these steps:

• Submit Your Application: Once you have filled in all the required fields, submit your application.
• If you were previously on FSM at your primary school you will not need to re-apply

September 2025 update:

From 1 April 2025, the government has made changes to how Free School Meals are managed.
Previously, if your child qualified for free meals, they kept that support even if your circumstances changed. This was called Transitional Protection.

But now, that protection has ended.

So what does this mean for you?

• If your child was already receiving Free School Meals before April 2025, don’t worry — they’ll continue to get them until they finish their current school phase.
• But if your child is moving to a new school phase — like from Year 6 to Year 7, or from Year 11 to sixth form — you’ll need to reapply and your eligibility will be checked again.
• And if you’re applying for the first time after April 2025, your eligibility will be reviewed regularly.
