  • Construction work begins

    Published 25/04/25

The Wisbech Academy, part of Brooke Weston Trust, has reached an exciting milestone as construction begins on its temporary modular building. Designed to meet the immediate needs of students and staff, the facility will provide a high-quality learning environment while the permanent school building is under development.

The project is being delivered by Portakabin, a leading provider of modular construction solutions known for its innovative approach to creating flexible and sustainable buildings.

Located approximately 200 metres from the site of the future permanent school, the temporary building will remain in use until the permanent accommodation is completed. The modular buildings will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to ensure students have access to high-quality educational resources, including IT suites with the latest technology, interactive whiteboards, laptops for student use, and modern classrooms designed for an optimal learning environment.

Students will also continue to benefit from access to the nearby facilities at Thomas Clarkson Academy (also a member of Brooke Weston Trust), particularly its sports amenities, to ensure a well-rounded educational experience. Both schools are proud members of the Brooke Weston Trust, which is committed to delivering outstanding educational opportunities across its academies.

Construction is proceeding swiftly, with Portakabin having been awarded the contract in February 2025. Groundworks began in March and are expected to continue through mid-April. The delivery and installation of the building are scheduled between the end of May and late July, followed by internal fit-out and final cleaning. The project is on schedule to deliver the new facility to The Wisbech Academy by the end of July 2025, ensuring a seamless transition for the start of the academic year.

Enabling works are currently underway, with the team establishing the site perimeter and setting up welfare facilities. Key activities include widening sections of road to improve vehicle flow and removing trees and shrubs where necessary. Deliveries are carefully scheduled to avoid disruption on Weasenham Road and to local businesses and residents. Efforts are also being made to minimise environmental disruption during construction. Machinery operation is limited to weekdays between 8am and 6pm, with occasional weekend work carried out thoughtfully, to reduce the impact on neighbours.

Duan Kapp, Contracts Manager at Portakabin, commented: "We are really proud to be delivering this innovative solution for The Wisbech Academy. Modular construction allows us to create high-quality educational spaces quickly while minimising disruption to the community."

Richard Scott, Executive Principal of The Wisbech Campus (which encompasses both schools), said: "We are excited to begin construction on The Wisbech Academy's temporary building. This project will provide our students with a modern, well-equipped learning environment, ensuring they have access to the best educational resources while we continue to develop our permanent facilities.

Our new main building, set to open in a couple of years, will accommodate 600 students and have a strong focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths education (STEM). We are committed to maintaining high standards of education and are grateful for the support of our community during this transition."

Dr Rachel Lawrence-Byron, Associate Principal at The Wisbech Academy, added: "We are looking forward to seeing the building work start over the next few weeks. The temporary modular buildings will give us a high-quality environment for learning and will signal an exciting new chapter in the development of our school."

As construction moves forward, The Wisbech Academy continues to grow, solidifying its position as a valuable asset that will provide outstanding educational opportunities for the Wisbech community for generations to come.

  • British Science Week

    Published 12/03/25

This week at The Wisbech Academy, our Year 7 students enthusiastically participated in British Science Week, delving into the theme “Change and Adapt” through a series of exciting activities in their science lessons.

A highlight of the week was a special guest talk from Mairenn, a PhD student from the University of Cambridge. Mairenn shared her research on evolution and ecosystems, specifically focusing on the behaviour of cuckoos in Zambia. The students were highly engaged, asking insightful questions about her daily activities, the challenges she encounters in the field, and the discoveries she has made. Mairenn's passion for her work and her dedication to advancing scientific knowledge were evident, leaving a strong impression on the students. This session was a highlight of the week, offering an inspiring experience that sparked curiosity and excitement about the natural world.

Additionally, students were thrilled by live science demonstrations, where they witnessed experiments in action and learnt about key scientific concepts in an engaging and interactive manner.

What Happens Without Air? In the vacuum chamber demo, students saw how a balloon expanded as air was removed, demonstrating the effects of atmospheric pressure. This is linked to real-world science, explaining why astronauts wear pressurised suits in space and why our ears pop at high altitudes.

A Foamy Surprise. A dramatic reaction between hydrogen peroxide and a catalyst produced a huge foam eruption. This experiment showed how oxygen gas is released rapidly, explaining chemical reactions and how catalysts speed things up—a highlight of the day!

Dry Ice – Science That’s Cool (Literally!) Dry ice, the solid form of carbon dioxide, doesn’t melt into a liquid like normal ice—it turns straight into gas. Students watched as it created thick fog, demonstrating sublimation. They also learnt how dry ice is used in medicine, food storage, and special effects.

A Fiery Finale. One of the most exciting demos was the Whoosh Bottle experiment. Ethanol vapours were ignited inside a bottle, creating a loud ‘whoosh’ as the fuel combusted. This showed how energy is released in combustion—just like in car engines and rocket launches.

British Science Week at The Wisbech Academy was a resounding success, inspiring our young scientists to explore and appreciate the wonders of science.

  • A Day of Remembrance

    Published 25/11/24

On Remembrance Day, we pause to honour the dedication and sacrifices of those who have served in the armed forces. Reflecting on the contributions of past generations, we take pride in recognising the commitment of our young cadets, who exemplify the values of service and responsibility.

At Wisbech Academy, we were delighted to join Thomas Clarkson Academy for our first Wisbech Campus event. 1300 students and over 100 staff spread across TCA Eden auditorium.

Brooke, a Year 11 student at TCA, delivered a heartfelt and moving speech in memory of her father, who passed away when she was just 7 months old. Her family founded a charity called Scotty’s Little Soldiers, which is dedicated to supporting children who have lost a parent in the armed forces. Brooke's courage and resilience touched everyone as she spoke about the profound impact of losing her father in war.

Mr. Scott, the Executive Principal for both TWA and TCA, also gave an inspiring speech. He spoke eloquently about the significance of Remembrance Day, emphasising the importance of honouring those who have served and sacrificed for our country. His words reminded us of all the deep respect and gratitude we owe to the armed forces and the enduring legacy of their bravery.

The Wisbech Academy was also very fortunate to receive a short assembly from Miss Rose, a maths teacher at TCA who previously served in the RAF and is now a Flying Officer in the Air Cadets of 272 (Wisbech) Squadron. Along with her amazing team of cadets, Miss Rose explained to the students the benefits of joining the cadets and the importance of Remembrance Day. Her presentation highlighted the values of discipline, teamwork, and community service that the cadets embody, encouraging students to consider joining and contributing to this proud tradition.

  • New initiative at our school

    Published 12/11/24

We are excited to introduce a new initiative at our school called Hot Chocolate Fridays!

This special event is designed to recognise and reward students who have demonstrated exceptional effort and gone above and beyond in their studies and behaviour.

Students are nominated for Hot Chocolate Friday for a variety of reasons. This could be by showing consistent effort in their studies, or by demonstrating the TWA values. For example, on our first hot Chocolate Friday, students were nominated for service to the community, because they gave up their free time to support the school's Open Evening. Other students were nominated because they chose to give up their free time to pick up litter.

We believe that acknowledging and rewarding positive behaviour and academic achievements will motivate our students to continue putting in their best efforts.

Thank you for your support in making this initiative a success. We look forward to celebrating our students’ achievements together!
