Purpose of Study

Mathematics is a fundamental, creative, and interconnected discipline that underpins so much of modern life—from scientific discovery and technological innovation to finance and everyday problem-solving. As a specialist school for Maths and Science, The Wisbech Academy recognises the essential role mathematics plays in shaping students’ understanding of the world. We are committed to delivering a high-quality mathematics education that nurtures curiosity, logical thinking, and confidence in applying mathematical skills across a wide range of contexts.

What Makes Mathematics at The Wisbech Academy Special?

At The Wisbech Academy, our specialist status in Maths and Science means we are uniquely placed to offer a dynamic and enriched learning experience. Our dedicated team of expert teachers delivers a rigorous, engaging curriculum that supports students of all abilities to achieve excellence. We champion a mastery approach, building deep conceptual understanding and strong problem-solving skills. Through tailored interventions, cross-curricular links with science, and exciting enrichment opportunities, we empower students to thrive academically and appreciate the real-world relevance of mathematics in STEM fields and beyond.

Aims of the Maths Curriculum

Our mathematics curriculum is designed to:

•Ensure fluency in the fundamental concepts of mathematics through structured, cumulative learning.

•Promote mathematical reasoning, enabling students to articulate and justify their thinking with clarity.

•Develop problem-solving resilience through exposure to both familiar and unfamiliar contexts.

•Inspire ambition and prepare students for future pathways in further education, STEM careers, and everyday life.

Year 7 Mathematics Curriculum Overview

At The Wisbech Academy, our Year 7 mathematics curriculum is built on the SPARX Maths programme— an evidence-based, adaptive learning platform that supports mastery and confidence from the very beginning of secondary school. As a specialist school for Maths and Science, we provide a strong foundation in mathematical thinking and problem-solving, ensuring every student is equipped for long-term success.

Curriculum Focus Areas:

1. Number Sense & Place Value

Students begin by strengthening their understanding of the number system, including ordering, rounding, and working with negative numbers and decimals. This foundational knowledge supports fluency and accuracy throughout all mathematical learning.

2. Four Operations

Pupils consolidate and extend their skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, including mental methods, formal written techniques, and estimation. Applications in real-life contexts and problem-solving are embedded throughout.

3. Fractions, Decimals & Percentages

Students develop a deep understanding of the connections between these representations, learning to convert, compare, calculate and apply them in a range of contexts, including proportion and percentage change.

4. Algebraic Thinking

An introduction to algebraic notation, expressions, and simple equations forms the basis of mathematical reasoning. Pupils begin to generalise patterns, use function machines, and solve linear equations.

5. Geometry & Measure

Students explore properties of 2D and 3D shapes, angles, symmetry, perimeter, area, and units of measurement. Spatial reasoning and accurate use of mathematical instruments are key focus areas.

6. Ratio & Proportion

Pupils begin to explore the concept of ratio, scaling, and direct proportion, laying the groundwork for further study in higher years.

7. Data & Statistics

An introduction to data handling, including collecting, presenting, and interpreting data using tables, bar charts, pictograms, and averages.

SPARX Maths Integration

All Year 7 students use SPARX Maths for weekly homework and targeted practice. The platform provides personalised, automatically marked tasks that adapt to each learner’s strengths and areas for development. Teachers use SPARX data to inform in-class support and stretch, ensuring no student is left behind and high achievers are continually challenged.
